There seemed to be a really strong theme of making at this years Milan Design Week. From The future in the Making at Palacio Clerici, Making Together by Logotel in Ventura Lambrata, HackedMilan at the La Rinascente department store, to live demonstrations of making in action.
Within the Train shed at the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Technologia two giant digital stamping and pressing machines make steel chairs to be given away to a lucky few, in a installation for Tom Dixon. These tools are on display to showcase a new range of products that utilise CNC stamping and pressing. According to Tom Dixon “the digital industrial revolution has begun.”
Watch the video below from 5.20 onwards.to see the machines – although feel free to watch it all!
Also within the Museum there was a live demonstration of gelato making workshops, with guidance on hand and video instruction participants were asked to dream up new and unique ice cream variations that they could realise on site.
Outside the Museum on the british retailer SCP’s stand a master upholster worked within a mocked up workshop busy upholstering timber frame seats in a demonstration of the craftsmanship of their products.
In the Brera Design District at the Fritz Hanson store another master upholster worked from a shipping container sewing together their new chair design that consisted of a leather and fabric seat shell with a solid ash under-frame.
